Delayed gratification:
The habit that helps your future self.
Delayed gratification is a concept I wish I had fully understood and embraced earlier in life.
Hi guys, welcome to another article from the best Substacker🤗.
What is delayed gratification?
It is simply delaying satisfaction now so you can enjoy greater satisfaction later. For instance, investing my 5k instead of spending it on shawarma.
Delayed gratification is a concept that would have saved me multiple times and would have prevented some of the situations I currently find myself in.
If you struggle with self-control, you should actually consider embracing it.
Let us say, for example, that you are trying to lose weight like I am. Delayed gratification is telling yourself to put down that hamburger so you can achieve the body you want.
If you are looking to save more money, delayed gratification is not buying that dress you do not actually need and putting the money into your emergency fund instead, so your future self can thank you.
The way I want you to see this concept, if you want it to work, is to imagine that your actions today are either helping or hurting a future version of yourself.
You are saving your future self from regretting not dropping the hamburger or not putting that 5k into investments.
Instant gratification kills discipline. It encourages a lack of self-control.
An example of instant gratification is eating pizza instead of sticking to your diet. You get a type of satisfaction that fades almost immediately after you are done eating. Then you spend the next few hours wishing you had made a better choice.
Another example is spending hours scrolling through Instagram instead of using that time to watch a course that could earn you a lot of money if you mastered the skill.
Delayed gratification is choosing the future over the cravings of the present.
It is understanding that not everything you want now is worth having now.
The next time you are about to indulge in a habit that only satisfies your immediate desires, remind yourself that you can delay it and gain something much better in return.
This is another principle I have decided to embrace in my self-development journey.
If you have been following this journey, how is yours going?
